Morocco Halts Tomato Exports to African Markets

Source: Reuters·Edited by Editor TO·

Morocco has temporarily suspended tomato exports to African markets as authorities seek to improve domestic availability and ease rising prices. The decision follows lower production in Souss Massa, the country’s main tomato-growing region, alongside higher fertilizer and fuel costs. A government source described the measure as temporary and said shipments would resume soon. However, exports to European markets, where tomatoes command higher prices, are exempt. Morocco is the second-largest tomato supplier to the European Union and while it exports to Africa, its African market is relatively small. The move follows earlier restrictions on some food exports and reflects the government’s stated priority of protecting domestic food supplies.
