Morocco has opened campaigning for parliamentary elections scheduled for September 23, with 27 political parties competing for 395 seats in the House of Representatives. More than 15.8 million voters are registered, making the contest significant for the composition of the country’s lower chamber. The election will also test the strength of the ruling coalition formed in 2021. That year, Aziz Akhannouch’s National Rally of Independents won the most seats in parliament, followed by the Authenticity and Modernity Party and the Istiqlal Party. The three subsequently formed a coalition government led by Akhannouch. The governing parties therefore face an opportunity to reinforce their mandate, while opposition forces can use the vote to reshape Parliament’s balance. Longer term, the election’s credibility could influence public confidence in Morocco’s political institutions and the government’s standing after the vote.
