Morocco is set to build a $1.5 billion waste-to-energy facility in Casablanca, Africa’s second plant of its kind, aimed at reducing pollution while generating electricity. The project is expected to begin construction by the end of the year and become fully operational by mid-2030. The plant will process approximately 1.5 million metric tons of waste annually, generating around 115 megawatts of electricity—enough to supply nearly 1 million people—using waste, landfill gas, and solar power. Developers say the facility will significantly reduce methane emissions from the heavily polluted Mediouna landfill, the country’s largest. However, critics argue such incineration-based plants undermine recycling efforts and release harmful emissions.
