Morocco Vows to Uphold Western Sahara Ceasefire

Morocco says it will keep honoring the Western Sahara ceasefire even though the United Nations peacekeeping mission has ended. The mission ended after the Security Council declined to renew its mandate, removing an international presence that had monitored the ceasefire for 35 years. Morocco, which considers Western Sahara part of its territory, welcomed that outcome. The Royal Palace argued the mission could not ensure compliance and its functions were outdated.  However, the Polisario Front, which is fighting for the region’s independence, said it was concerned about the UN’s decision. Algeria also voiced regret. Morocco’s foreign minister said the country’s next step is to have the issue removed from the UN decolonization committee, citing support from two-thirds of members.
