Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) topped Wednesday’s parliamentary election with 97 of 395 seats, edging out its partners in the outgoing government, RNI (66) and Istiqlal (65), according to preliminary results. The Islamist Justice and Development Party, which suffered a crushing defeat in 2021, also rebounded sharply, winning 54 seats. PAM’s result gives it the strongest claim to lead coalition talks, although its leaders have ruled out renewing cooperation with RNI. PAM’s leader Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri is in the running to become prime minister, as is Fouzi Lekjaa, the budget minister and football federation chief. However, election turnout fell to 38.02% from 50% in 2021, suggesting weaker public engagement. The next government will inherit a $20 billion infrastructure push tied Morocco’s co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup, alongside pressure over unemployment, living costs, and youth frustration.
