Morocco’s China Partnership Challenges Europe’s Auto Industry

Morocco is rapidly becoming a key manufacturing hub for China’s electric vehicle industry, attracting billions of dollars in investment. Chinese battery maker Gotion High Tech is leading the charge, building Morocco’s first EV battery gigafactory. Additional Chinese companies are building facilities to produce battery components, strengthening Morocco’s position in the global EV supply chain, particularly given its vast phosphate reserves and extensive free trade agreements. However, European officials suspect Beijing may be using Morocco to sidestep EU tariffs on Chinese vehicles, which range up to 35% for some automakers. In contrast, analysts argue Morocco’s political stability, strategic location, and access to African markets make it an attractive investment destination beyond tariff considerations.
