Morocco’s Election-winning Party Seals Four-party Coalition

By Anadolu Ajansi·Edited by Editor TO·

Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), which won the September 23 parliamentary election, has agreed to form a governing coalition with three other political parties. The alliance, announced after a second round of negotiations in Rabat, comprises PAM, the Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS). Together, the four parties control 207 of the parliament’s 395 seats, exceeding the 198 seats required for a majority. PAM holds 97 seats, Istiqlal has 65, USFP has 26, and PPS has 19. The partners say they will quickly put forward ministerial candidates and draft a government program. Meanwhile, the National Rally of Independents, which led the outgoing government and placed second with 66 seats, was excluded from the new alliance.
