Patrice Motsepe for president
South Africa’s political circles are quietly debating whether billionaire Patrice Motsepe could emerge as a stabilizing force for the struggling African National Congress. With an estimated net worth of $3 billion, the African Rainbow Minerals founder and Confederation of African Football president possesses the massive financial resources and logistical infrastructure required to dominate an internal leadership contest. Motsepe is also popular within the ANC, boasting a 47% favorability rating among voters. While his rise might benefit the party, it could also achieve the opposite by alienating the current frontrunners for ANC leadership, such as Deputy President Paul Mashatile. Beyond this, substituting political legitimacy with billionaire capital could fundamentally alter the trajectory and core identity of one of Africa’s oldest liberation movements and shift power away from ideological factions.
