Mozambique is betting big on electricity with the $6 billion Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric plant, the largest energy project in southern Africa in half a century. Backed by the World Bank and private partners, the dam is expected to produce 1,500 megawatts when it begins operations in 2031, helping bridge the region’s 10,000-megawatt power deficit. This initiative is a cornerstone of Mozambique’s ambitious goal to connect its entire population to electricity by 2030. Beyond exporting power to neighbors, the real victory is seen in local communities where progress in electrification is already sparking new businesses, creating jobs, and radically improving livelihoods. However, challenges remain, including high debt and the lack of a comprehensive distribution network. Nevertheless, many Mozambicans view the project as proof that light can spark livelihoods and drive the nation’s future.
