Freshly released US Justice Department files tied to Jeffrey Epstein have unexpectedly mentioned Zimbabwe’s former leader Robert Mugabe, sparking new intrigue around the disgraced financier’s global reach. Emails from 2015 suggest Epstein once floated the idea of helping Zimbabwe create a new currency after hyperinflation destroyed the local dollar, while unverified FBI testimony from 2017 claimed he also managed wealth for Mugabe and even Russia’s Vladimir Putin. In the email, Epstein noted he was not friends with Mugabe but could “easily get his attention,” describing the nation as a “great petri dish.” These mentions do not indicate proven wrongdoing, and a former Mugabe ally suggested the information could be fabricated. If true, however, Epstein’s alleged dealings would have violated US sanctions imposed on Mugabe since 2003.
