Multiple African Films Make Debut at Toronto Festival

African cinema has a notable presence at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, with 10 films featured across the program and a Global African Hub connecting filmmakers and industry executives with international partners. Five African productions and co-productions will screen in the Centrepiece program: The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, Ben’Imana, Congo Boy, Future Tense, and Soumsoum and The Night of the Stars. Two others—John Trengove’s South African film The Smell of Apples’ and the Ghanaian film Zjili: A Story of Sisterhood and the Burdens of Excess—will premiere in Platform and Discovery. Six additional African projects in development will receive market screenings.
