Ugandan military commander Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, has announced plans to run for president in 2031. The 52-year-old, long viewed as a potential successor to his father, made the declaration in posts on X, predicting he would win 90% of the vote with Museveni’s backing. Kainerugaba, who leads the Patriotic League of Uganda, played a prominent role in his father’s latest re-election campaign, including a crackdown on opponents and an internet shutdown. He had floated a presidential run before the last election but ultimately withdrew. Museveni, 81, has led Uganda since 1986. However, his rule has been plagued by persistent allegations of human rights abuses, which his government denies. Following the last election, opposition leader Bobi Wine fled to the US, citing safety fears. Meanwhile, longtime opposition figure and Museveni rival, Kizza Besigye, has been jailed since 2024 and remains on trial for treason charges.
