Uganda’s military is becoming increasingly central to the debate over who will eventually succeed President Yoweri Museveni, following the growing political and institutional influence of his son General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Museveni secured a seventh term in January, while Muhoozi, who serves as military chief, has publicly expressed his ambition to become president. Muhoozi’s influence has also expanded through the Patriotic League of Uganda, a political pressure group aligned with his supporters, including ministers in the current government. His rivalry with Museveni’s son-in-law and presidential adviser Odrek Rwabwogo has turned personal and public. Meanwhile, the opposition has weakened further as veteran leader Kizza Besigye remains detained and Bobi Wine has fled into exile in the US after threats to his life. The development gives Muhoozi access to both military authority and an emerging political network, while raising questions about the boundary between civilian government and the armed forces.
