Two African filmmakers proudly hold their BAFTA awards, highlighting their success in the film industry and recognition for their work.
My Father’s Shadow made history at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, claiming the highly coveted Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. The British-Nigerian drama, set during Nigeria’s tense 1993 election crisis, follows two brothers navigating Lagos with their troubled father while confronting themes of memory and identity. The recognition crowns a strong festival run that began at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film earned critical acclaim. Accepting the award, the director of My Father’s Shadow, Akinola Davies Jr, dedicated the honor to immigrant parents. Meanwhile, his brother, Wale Davies, who co-wrote the script, paid tribute to their late father, underscoring the film’s deeply personal roots.
