Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, becoming the first African city to do so after fending off bids from London, Munich, and Rome. World Athletics, track and field’s governing body, awarded Munich the 2031 edition, with Beijing already slated to host the 2027 edition. President Sebastian Coe called the choice difficult given four strong bids, but said bringing the championships to Africa for the first time would be historic. He described Nairobi’s bid as compelling and said the timing reflected the right combination of host, bid, and circumstances. Kenya previously bid unsuccessfully for the 2025 event but returned with a stronger proposal, including renovations to Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium. The country has substantial experience hosting major athletics competitions, including the 2017 World Under-18 Championships, the 2021 World Under-20 Championships, and the 2007 World Cross Country Championships.
