Namibia is advancing its hydrogen ambitions, with eight projects in development, three of which could start production in 2024. Supported by German funding, these initiatives aim to position Namibia as a key player in Southern Africa’s green hydrogen market. One notable project, HyIron, plans to produce 15,000 tons of emission-free iron by 2025. Another, the Daures Green Hydrogen Village, aims to generate 100 tons of green ammonia annually for fertilizer production. Despite interest in these products, no purchase agreements have been signed, especially since fossil fuel-based alternatives remain cheaper. However, Germany’s H2Global initiative might bridge the price gap by organizing bidding competitions for Namibia’s green products. Germany will provide more money to advance Namibia’s hydrogen ambitions, as will the EU. As a result, the country will receive a further €36.9 million in funding for other unspecified projects.
