Ghana has deepened its role as a regional security anchor by signing its first formal defense partnership with the European Union. The agreement, signed in Accra by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Ghana’s Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, aims to boost counterterrorism cooperation, intelligence sharing, and crisis response. The move comes as coastal West African countries brace for possible spillover from escalating violence in the Sahel. The deal builds on recent EU support and equips Ghanaian forces with a high-tech arsenal, including surveillance drones, anti-drone guns, and motorcycles. As threats evolve across the region, officials say stronger collaboration could help Ghana maintain stability while safeguarding both regional and international interests.
