Niger has increased its stake in the Madaouela uranium mining project to 40% from 20%, thereby bringing an end to its dispute with Australian explorer Atomic Eagle. In 2016, Niger awarded Atomic Eagle, known then as GoviEx, rights to the Madaouela project, located in the Agadez region. However, Niamey revoked the permit in 2024, returning the asset to the state. In response, Atomic Eagle filed for international arbitration. In February 2025, both parties suspended proceedings to negotiate a settlement. Under the new agreement, Atomic Eagle will retain operational oversight of the mine and a 60% stake, down from the original 80%. Niger will own the remaining stake. The deal follows a broader trend across the region where military-led governments are seeking greater control over natural resources and mining revenues.
