Niger Reaches Preliminary Agreement on IMF Financing

The IMF emblem represents international financial stability and cooperation amid economic disputes.

The International Monetary Fund has reached a preliminary agreement with Niger that could provide approximately $203 million over three years to support economic reforms and development priorities. The proposed Extended Credit Facility arrangement requires the approval of the IMF’s Executive Board before funding can proceed. The fund said the current program helped Niger preserve macroeconomic stability despite exceptional shocks. The new arrangement is intended to consolidate those gains and support the government’s 2025–2029 development strategy. The IMF projects growth of 7% this year and a similar rate in 2027, driven by agriculture and oil exports. It cautioned, however, that significant risks remain, notably security threats from regular jihadist attacks, as well as climate-related shocks that could undermine the outlook.
