Nigerien authorities have reclaimed a key military base in Niamey after disgruntled soldiers attempted a coup against President Abdourahmane Tchiani. The soldiers began their offensive with an attack on the base, known as Base 101, before moving toward the presidential palace and national broadcaster. State media later reported that the base had been retaken and the mutineers detained. Russia’s Africa Corps reportedly helped Nigerien forces suppress the mutiny after Niger requested Russian assistance. However, Italian military personnel, also present in the city, were not involved. Algeria also deployed four fighter jets to Niamey following a request from Niger. Analysts say the uprising, largely driven by young officers frustrated over battlefield losses to Islamist militants, exposes deep cracks within the military and could deepen Niger’s reliance on Russia.
