Nigeria Approves Upgrades for Four South-South Ports
Nigeria’s federal government has approved comprehensive upgrades for the Onne, Rivers, Delta, and Calabar ports. The upgrades are intended to improve cargo handling, shorten vessel turnaround times, and strengthen regional connectivity. The move is part of a broader effort to expand maritime capacity and reduce the concentration of cargo traffic around Lagos. The program follows earlier approvals for modernization of Lagos’ Apapa and Tin Can Island ports. It also forms part of a wider strategy to improve the country’s maritime infrastructure, which includes the development of deep-sea ports at Ibom, Bakassi, Agge, Gateway, Ondo, and Bonny. The government says modernized ports, combined with road, rail, and inland waterway improvements, can support trade, investment, employment, and economic diversification.
