Nigeria Deepens Global Energy Ties With IEA Deal

Nigeria has become the first member of OPEC to join the International Energy Agency (IEA) as an associate member, marking a significant step in the country’s international energy engagement. The move strengthens cooperation between the IEA and Africa’s largest oil producer as Nigeria works to improve energy security, expand refining capacity, and increase fuel exports. The IEA said its governing board unanimously approved Nigeria’s admission, expanding its associate network to 14 countries representing more than 80% of global energy demand. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol described the decision as an important milestone for global energy governance, saying closer collaboration would support Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen energy access, economic growth, and long-term energy policy.
