Nigeria Investigates Forged Presidency Agency

Nigeria’s Tinubu

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered an anti-corruption investigation after allegations surfaced that a fraudulent agency, the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, operated within his own office using forged documents. Authorities have launched a manhunt for Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, the agency’s supposed director, on suspicion of forgery and impersonation, among other offenses. They have also dismissed reports that the president’s chief of staff signed the letter establishing the council. However, Matthew has stated that he is innocent and that the body was legally established. Now a fugitive, he has vowed to appear in court to defend himself. Although government officials insist no public funds were disbursed, the case has exposed potential weaknesses in Nigeria’s administrative controls. Tinubu stands to gain if the investigation strengthens institutional oversight and restores public confidence, while those implicated could face prosecution if the allegations are substantiated.
