Race cars speed through Kigali’s circuit, highlighting Rwanda’s potential to host a major F1 event.
Nigeria has officially entered the race to host Formula 1’s first African Grand Prix in more than three decades, joining South Africa and Rwanda in competing for a place on the sport’s crowded global calendar. The National Sports Commission confirmed that Abuja is the proposed host city, with Opus Racing Promotions representing Nigeria in negotiations with Formula One Management and the FIA on a project estimated at around $500 million. If selected, Nigeria would become the first West African country to stage a Formula 1 World Championship race. South Africa’s proposal centers on its rich motorsport heritage, having hosted 23 Grands Prix between 1962 and 1993, while Rwanda is building its campaign around a purpose-built circuit near Bugesera International Airport. With only one bid likely to succeed, the three-way contest marks Africa’s strongest collective push yet to reclaim a spot on the F1 calendar.
