Nigeria Launches Agriculture Fund in Diversification Push

Nigeria has launched a $500 million Niger Delta Agricultural Investment Fund, one of the country’s largest agricultural investment initiatives, aimed at reducing dependence on oil and boosting food security in the oil-producing Niger Delta region. The initiative will operate as a commercially driven investment vehicle rather than a traditional government intervention program and will finance projects across the agricultural value chain, including aquaculture, palm oil, livestock, fisheries, marine resources, and crop production. The move builds on Nigeria’s broader push to modernize agriculture, including plans to deploy thousands of tractors and a $1 billion partnership with Brazil aimed at expanding mechanization and agricultural infrastructure. Officials hope the fund will unlock the Niger Delta’s long-underused farming potential, creating jobs and cutting food imports in a region historically defined by crude oil production.
