Nigeria Launches Fund to Expand Off-grid Electricity
A vast solar power farm in Africa, advancing renewable energy initiatives to promote sustainable development in the region.
Nigeria has commercially launched a $300 million Distributed Renewable Energy Fund designed to finance mini-grids, standalone solar systems, and other distributed-energy projects outside the country’s traditional electricity network. The fund is being managed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Africa50, with the World Bank providing an initial $25 million through its International Development Association financing arm. The initiative is intended to attract additional private investment into renewable-energy projects and expand electricity access in underserved communities. Its eventual impact will depend on how much private capital it mobilizes and how many new connections are ultimately delivered. The fund comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with major electricity-access challenges, particularly in rural and underserved areas where conventional grid expansion can be expensive.
