Nigeria has launched its long-anticipated malaria vaccination campaign, the country’s first, to combat the high infection rate of the disease within its borders. It received 846,000 doses of the highly effective R21 malaria vaccine last week and expects another 140,000 doses as part of the first batch. According to health authorities, the campaign’s initial rollout will target high-risk states like Kebbi and Bayelsa, where the disease burden is highest. Nigeria accounts for 27% of global malaria cases. In 2022, it recorded almost 67 million infections and nearly 200,000 deaths, most of which were among children under five. With the vaccination campaign, the country’s government hopes to eliminate the disease. The government, alongside global partners such as Gavi, is covering the vaccines’ cost to ensure equitable access. The campaign will complement existing tools like bed nets and treatments, with health experts emphasizing the importance of community engagement for the vaccine’s success.
