Nigeria is spearheading a new continental effort to unify oil regulations, launching the African Petroleum Regulators Forum (AFRIPERF) to attract investment into the region’s energy sector. Sixteen countries gathered in Accra for the signing, with eight—including Nigeria, Ghana, and Somalia—formally endorsing the charter and others pledging support pending domestic consultations. AFRIPERF will serve as a platform for regulatory cooperation, transparency, and knowledge sharing, addressing cross-border challenges such as gas trade, emissions, and digitalization. Led by Nigeria’s Gbenga Komolafe on an interim basis, this collaborative effort promises to foster innovation and responsible resource management across the continent’s petroleum sector. Elections to determine AFRIPERF’s leadership and headquarters are planned, signaling Africa’s ambition to align energy governance with global standards.
