Nigeria has launched an investigation into major technology companies, including Meta, Alphabet, X, and generative AI platforms, over allegations of anti-competitive practices and the unauthorized use of news content. Ordered by President Bola Tinubu, the inquiry will be led by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission following complaints from the Nigerian Press Organisation, which represents publishers, broadcasters, and journalists. Regulators will examine claims involving market dominance, copyright infringement, and the use of journalistic material to train AI models. The case mirrors global scrutiny of tech platforms’ relationships with news publishers, following precedents such as South Africa’s recent settlement with Google and YouTube, a substantial French fine against Google, and bargaining frameworks adopted in Australia and Canada to compensate media companies for content usage.
