Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja after a woman who arrived in the country from Uganda tested positive. Authorities have since begun tracing 44 potentially exposed persons for monitoring. The patient developed symptoms in early October and was admitted to a private hospital four days later, where doctors diagnosed her with Ebola. Uganda says the woman is Nigerian and had only transited through the country while returning from a business trip to eastern Congo. The Ugandan Ministry of Health reiterated that the country has no active confirmed cases. The case is linked to a wider outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola, a strain with a reported case fatality rate approaching 50% and no approved specific treatment. It has spread across several African regions, including Kenya, which recently reported its ninth case. Nigeria had already increased surveillance and established an Ebola task force after the outbreak began in Congo.
