The United States has imposed a 12.5% tariff on imports from Nigeria as part of a revised trade framework targeting goods linked to forced labor and other unfair trade practices. Announced by the Office of the US Trade Representative, the measure places Nigeria among 38 countries, including South Africa, facing higher import duties under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. This follows the US Supreme Court’s recent decision to strike down President Donald Trump’s earlier reciprocal tariff framework, prompting a revised approach from the Office of the US Trade Representative. The new duties apply to 99.4% of US imports, although products such as oil, gas, fertilizer, and certain food items are exempt. The tariff is higher than the 10% rate imposed on countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, and India.
