Nigeria and the United States have reached a deal aimed at attracting more American investment to Nigeria’s mining sector. The agreement includes a framework that covers geological data, exploration, mineral development and processing, infrastructure, and technical capacity. While it is best known for oil, Nigeria also holds sizable deposits of lithium, gold, tin, gemstones, iron ore, and phosphate. Lithium, in particular, is in very high demand because it is a core component for batteries used in clean energy technology. Through increased domestic processing, Nigeria seeks to create jobs, strengthen technical skills, and expand opportunities for Nigerian businesses.
