Nigerian Hypemen Reshaping Afrobeats Entertainment

By The Guardian·Edited by Editor TO·

A new wave of Nigerian entertainers known as hypemen is reshaping Afrobeats performances through energetic vocals, improvised catchphrases, and audience interaction. The emerging style, increasingly called Afrohype or lamba, occupies the space between singing and rapping, using rhythmic exclamations and playful commentary to intensify the atmosphere at parties, concerts, and nightclubs. The style traces back to the praise-singing and call-and-response traditions of West and Central Africa. This tradition, once the purview of griots, gave birth to Kinshasa’s atalaku in the 1980s and Côte d’Ivoire’s coupé-décalé in the early 2000s, making Afrohype the latest iteration of an old custom. Although the scene remains predominantly male, women have also established themselves as stars in their own right.
