Natural gas is driving a sustainable and reliable power future for the continent
Nigeria’s average daily natural gas production climbed to 7.93 billion standard cubic feet per day in May, according to data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The figure represents a modest year-on-year increase and reflects continued growth in the country’s gas sector. Non-associated gas production slightly exceeded associated gas output, highlighting the increasing importance of dedicated gas projects. Export sales accounted for roughly 40% of total production, with 26.5% going towards field operations and own use. Domestic consumption accounted for 26.6%, reflecting the government’s expanded efforts to support power generation and industrial development. Meanwhile, gas flaring remained below 7% of total output, underscoring progress toward Nigeria’s goal of ending routine flaring by 2030. Nigeria utilized approximately 92% of its gas production between January and April 2026, highlighting steady progress as the government positions natural gas as a cornerstone of economic growth and energy security.
