Nigeria has approved a new $4.5 billion financing arrangement with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), replacing and expanding an existing oil-backed loan to free up funding for key national priorities. The National Economic Council endorsed the deal, which refinances a 2023 pre-export crude facility with an outstanding balance of $1.5 billion and adds $3 billion in fresh borrowing. The agreement is backed by 78,750 barrels of crude oil per day, down from the 90,000 barrels per day pledged under the previous facility. According to the Office of Vice President Kashim Shettima, the transaction will strengthen Nigeria’s financing structure, increase resources for infrastructure projects, and help bolster the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
