Nigeria’s top political opposition figures—including 2023 presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Musa Kwankwaso—have united under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner in a bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Capitalizing on widespread frustration over Tinubu’s painful economic reforms, the coalition hopes to leverage the combined 60.9% vote share they secured against Tinubu in the last election. However, the newly formed alliance faces significant internal and external hurdles. The heavyweights have yet to reach consensus on a presidential candidate, risking a major internal clash over informal North-South power-rotation conventions. Furthermore, the ADC is embroiled in a severe legal crisis after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently refused to recognize the party’s new leadership following a court challenge. While the ruling APC dismisses the alliance as a “coalition of confusion,” the unified front represents the most formidable electoral threat to Tinubu’s administration to date.
