Smartphone ownership in Nigeria rose from 64% in 2023 to 75% in 2025, according to a nationwide study by KPMG and Orange Group Nigeria. The research, based on 13,251 respondents across 12 major cities, found that wider smartphone adoption is expanding the use of digital applications in finance, commerce, entertainment, education, and transportation. The growth has been supported by Nigeria’s youthful population, improving connectivity, and greater device affordability. Internet use is also increasing, with Nigerian Communications Commission data cited by the report showing 157 million internet subscribers and more than 1.5 million terabytes of data consumption in May 2026. However, significant access gaps remain. More than one-third of mobile subscribers were still using 2G networks, while affordability, infrastructure limitations, digital literacy, and cybersecurity concerns continue to affect the inclusivity of Nigeria’s digital transformation.
