British Nigerian artist Nnena Kalu, celebrated for her large-scale draped sculptures and vortex-like circular drawings, has made history as the first person with a learning disability to win the prestigious Turner Prize. Kalu, who has autism and limited verbal communication, was recognized for works including Drawing 21 and Hanging Sculpture 1-10, showcased in Liverpool and at Manifesta in Barcelona. Praised for her bold, expressive style and masterful use of scale, color, and composition, Kalu’s career spans decades of creating two-dimensional and sculptural pieces, often using textiles, tape, and recycled materials. Her victory marks a milestone for inclusivity in contemporary art, shattering long-standing prejudice while amplifying the discourse on self-taught and underrepresented artists.
