Paris Exhibition Celebrates Maghreb Wedding Traditions
Paris’s Institut du monde arabe is celebrating the shared marriage heritage of Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia in a new exhibition, “Vive la mariée!” The show, which will run till February 28, explores the bride’s central role in marriage ceremonies through embroidered garments, protective ornaments, and rituals. It pairs traditional jewelry, costumes, and objects with paintings, photographs, installations, videos, archives, and sound works by 27 contemporary artists, most of them women. The exhibition also examines how Maghreb customs differ across the three countries, from Algeria’s celebratory ululations to Morocco’s ceremonial caftans and Tunisia’s traditional bridal trousseau. As younger generations increasingly favor simpler ceremonies to avoid mounting costs and logistical pressures, the exhibition documents how enduring traditions continue to express cultural identity.
