South Africa is preparing to submit a revised trade proposal to the United States in an urgent bid to lower the 30% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which threaten 30,000 jobs in key sectors like automotive and agriculture. Trade Minister Parks Tau confirmed that a revised proposal, approved by the cabinet, will be submitted to Washington immediately. The tariff, in effect since August 7, places South Africa among a small group of countries facing steep US trade barriers, reducing its competitiveness. While talks with the US continue, Pretoria is diversifying export markets, targeting China and Japan. A deal to send multiple stone fruits to China is expected next month, with future negotiations covering mangoes and cherries.
