Thousands of protesters rallied in Abidjan this weekend, despite heavy rain, to demand the return of opposition leader Tidjane Thiam to Côte d’Ivoire’s presidential ballot. Thiam, the head of the PDCI party, was disqualified over his former French citizenship, though he renounced it in March. Protesters, clad in party colors and chanting “Thithi president,” condemned the electoral commission’s decision as undemocratic. Thiam, who was not at the protest, published a video message encouraging the protesters and pledging to continue the fight for fair elections. The protests are a sign of rising tensions ahead of October’s vote, especially as President Alassane Ouattara, in office since 2011, is expected to seek a controversial fourth term.
