Ramaphosa Announces New Measures Against GBV

By AP·Edited by Editor TO·

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced new measures to confront gender-based violence after the killing of at least 11 women in Ekurhuleni since July. In a televised address, Ramaphosa said he had directed local authorities to complete a safety audit within 60 days. The audit will seek to identify dangerous locations, including areas with broken streetlights, abandoned buildings, and poorly secured parks. In addition, police and prosecutors have been ordered to review unresolved cases involving murder, attempted murder, rape, and other gender-based violence within 90 days. Following the audit, Pretoria will launch funded interventions to target the identified safety hotspots and tackle investigative backlogs. Ramaphosa acknowledged that efforts so far have fallen short of protecting South African women and urged men to lead the response.
