South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has filed a legal challenge in the Western Cape High Court seeking to overturn findings from the controversial Phala Phala panel report. The 2022 report, led by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo, concluded there was prima facie evidence that Ramaphosa violated the constitution and abused his office over the theft of cash from his Phala Phala farm. Ramaphosa argues the panel relied on hearsay evidence, exceeded its authority, and used potentially unlawful documents, including confidential Namibian police records. The challenge follows a Constitutional Court ruling that Parliament acted unlawfully when lawmakers voted against adopting the report. National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has since established a 31-member impeachment committee to reconsider the matter, keeping political pressure on the president ahead of further proceedings.
