Gwede Mantashe, South Africa’s current Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, has been named Acting Police Minister amid a deepening crisis in South Africa’s law enforcement. This temporary move follows explosive allegations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who claimed that a powerful criminal syndicate had infiltrated the police, intelligence, and judiciary. Mkhwanazi accused suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of interfering in murder investigations and helping dismantle a special investigative team probing political killings. In response, Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on special leave and set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allegations. Mantashe will serve until Professor Firoz Cachalia takes office in August, following his retirement from academic service.
