South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on immediate leave and launched a commission of inquiry following explosive claims of gang ties and political interference. The allegations, made by KwaZulu-Natal police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, accuse Mchunu of dismantling a task force probing over 600 political killings and seizing sensitive case files. Despite Mchunu’s denials, the uproar sparked widespread calls for action, resulting in Ramaphosa’s moves. Law professor Firoz Cachalia has been appointed interim police minister. Meanwhile, the inquiry, led by South Africa’s deputy chief justice, has been tasked with investigating possible criminal infiltration of law enforcement. Critics argue the move doesn’t go far enough, warning that public trust is eroding while Mchunu, a close ally of Ramaphosa, remains on the payroll and under limited scrutiny.
