As Western aid cuts and shifting US policies spark fears of waning influence in Africa, questions are mounting over the continent’s democratic future. While this reduction in aid raises concerns, it also opens a significant opportunity for homegrown democratic strength. Despite this potential, troubling trends of suppressing political opposition persist across East Africa. Yet, this is only part of the story. In nations like Ghana and South Africa, citizens are increasingly voting based on economic performance and accountability, moving beyond tribal or party loyalties. Experts and activists argue that Africa must no longer look to the West as its democratic guide. Instead, the future lies in bolstering local civil society, strengthening regional observation bodies, and building uniquely African structures to hold power accountable, fostering a more authentic and resilient form of self-determined governance.
