Russia Expands African Diplomatic Network With New Embassies

Russia has opened eight embassies in Africa since the 2023 Russia-Africa summit, bringing its continental total to 48. President Vladimir Putin, who revealed this development at the 2026 summit, also backed plans by Botswana, Seychelles, and Togo to establish embassies in Russia, signaling growing two-way diplomatic engagement. Moscow is pursuing commercial ties alongside diplomacy, with six trade missions covering 16 African countries. Russian fertilizer shipments have also reportedly risen from about 1.5 million tons last year to more than 2.2 million tons so far this year. Putin said the ruble accounts for as much as 85% of Russia-Africa commercial transactions, which he argued reduces exposure to external pressure. Russia is also interested in relocating some production to Africa. The expansion may give Moscow more channels for influence and trade, while African governments gain additional partners but face choices over how to balance competing international relationships.
