Rwanda Secures Ten-year Deal to Host Formula One Racing
Formula One is heading back to Africa for the first time since 1993, after Rwanda secured a 10-year deal to host a Grand Prix, with the first race projected for the early 2030s. President Paul Kagame announced the agreement in Kigali, alongside Formula One chief Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The proposed circuit will be built near Bugesera International Airport, approximately 40 kilometers south of the capital. Designed by a firm led by former Austrian racing driver Alex Wurz, the track will measure more than six kilometers and feature 17 corners. The project marks the sport’s anticipated return to Africa for the first time since 1993. Rwanda hopes the event will raise its international profile and establish the country as a major destination for global sporting competitions.
