A widening diplomatic rift in West Africa escalated after Mali and Niger accused neighboring states and foreign powers of harboring and supporting armed terrorist groups. Speaking at a security forum in Senegal, Mali’s foreign minister alleged that regional neighbors are secretly fueling the very insurgencies they publicly condemn. Niger’s foreign minister echoed these explosive claims, explicitly pointing to France as a primary instigator of the violence. The rift benefits jihadist insurgencies as it undermines any coordinated counter-terrorism efforts across the volatile central Sahel. Civilians, however, stand to lose the most, as it could expose them to worsening insecurity. Despite the sharp rhetoric and mutual suspicion, Mali noted that limited cooperation with the regional bloc remains possible, signaling a future where the juntas and their neighbors can work together to make the region more secure.
