Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially endorsed former President Macky Sall’s candidacy to become the next United Nations secretary-general, despite years of political rivalry between the two leaders. The endorsement follows a meeting between Faye and Sall, after which Faye directed his government to fully back the bid, describing the endorsement as reflecting Senegal’s broader commitment to Africa. Sall, who led Senegal from 2012 to 2024, is among five candidates seeking to succeed António Guterres when his term ends on December 31. The endorsement is notable given that Faye’s administration previously criticized Sall’s record, including allegations of financial mismanagement, which Sall denies. Sall’s candidacy was previously nominated by Burundi in its capacity as chair of the African Union, but Senegal had withheld formal support until now.
